Monday morning in Quito

Monday morning in Quito

On Mondays, at 11am, President Rafael Correa steps onto the balcony of the Presidential Palace to watch over the ceremonial Changing of the Palace Guard in the Grand Plaza.

We caught a bit of the pomp this morning, and I shot these photos of the action:

There were brass bands, and nattily dressed soldiers on horseback.

Drums and swords and those jaunty under-chin hat straps.

Secret Service types up on the balcony with the President.

When the brass band started playing the National Anthem, an older woman standing next to me was singing along under her breath, and this nearby soldier spontaneously saluted. It was very moving, I could feel their love of country.

Ceremonial guard and serious guard, side by side.

As usual, my camera shifted away from what I was supposed to be watching and turned to the people around me. I am in love with the Quiteñans, the people of Quito..

Waving cheerily to the President!

Woman with her arm around her mother. You’ll often see adult men and women here walking arm in arm with their elderly parents.

I’ve rarely seen a stroller here. Children are held.

Another mother/daughter pair. Putting your sweater on your head is how it’s done here, rather than tying it over your shoulders.

The crowd gazed intently at the balcony to catch a glimpse of their president. He is a very popular leader, currently serving a third term.
DSC01592
This man never once lost physical contact with his wife, as far as I could see.
DSC01586
It’s very common to see children out & about with their grandparents.
DSC01596
Even teenagers don’t seem to mind physical contact with parents. Yesterday I watched a teenage boy put his arm around his father’s waist while they walked.

Quechua women and boy relaxing on a bench.

I finally remembered to take a shot of the handsome President for you. Here he is!

I have a whole collection of PDA photos from last time I was here. I’ll post it soon. It is my favorite thing about the Quiteñans. They are remarkable people!
