Avignon, France: A Mostly-Photo Gallery
Published on
I’m spending the month of May in the gorgeous city of Avignon. I was here last summer with my friend Kristy. When we stepped out of the train station and saw the magical walled city, my jaw dropped. It looks like Camelot! One night was not enough time to soak up the history and majesty of this city, so I’m very happy to have an apartment inside the city walls for a month. My apartment! My couch is right under that window. I didn’t take photos of the interior, but you can see some at the Airbnb listing here if you like: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/4452044
My street is very quiet. There’s a gallery across from me, and a sculptor who works in an open room a block away. She creates beautiful dancer figures.
My neighborhood is full of ethnic restaurants, galleries, and little markets.
Nearby, at Place du Carmes, a whole row of outdoor restaurants populates a street that was once part of a convent. Not many tourists here.
The tourists are all at Place l’Horloge! This square has restaurants, cafes, beautiful architecture, and a gorgeous carousel.
Hotel de Ville is a newer building in Place d’Horloge.
The Opera House.
Palais des Papes was once the Papal residence and the headquarters of Christianity.
Golden statue of the Virgin Mary on the Cathedrale Notre-Dame-des-Doms, next door to the Palias.
The famous medieval bridge, Pont d’Avignon.
A drawbridge where the bridge meets the city wall.
Part of the city wall.
One of the main entrances through the city wall, where the old world bumps up against the new.
The gate I use when I want to go outside the city wall to visit the river.
There’s a lovely path between the wall and the trees. I hope to walk all the way around the city soon (I’ve only made it 1/3 of the way around)
The river is right across the street from the city wall at my end. There’s another wonderful path for walking, running, or biking.
